Xi Jinping Meets with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia

On April 28, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia.

Xi Jinping asked Sergei Lavrov to convey his sincere greetings and best wishes to President Vladimir Putin. Xi Jinping pointed out that China attaches great importance to President Vladimir Putin's visit to China this year, and he is looking forward to having an in-depth exchange of views with President Vladimir Putin on enhancing the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination. Both sides should take the opportunities of the 15th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination to carry forward bilateral friendship from generation to generation, and cement the political and social foundation of bilateral relations.

Xi Jinping stressed that under the current circumstances, both China and Russia should strengthen the top-level design and strategic guidance of bilateral relations, enhance mutual strategic and political trust and promote bilateral practical cooperation, especially the collaboration on big projects. The two countries should further step up coordination and communication on major international and regional issues, join efforts to speed up the political settlement process of relevant issues and together contribute wisdom and solutions to safeguard world and regional peace and stability. Both sides should enhance cooperation within the framework of the CICA, push all sides to practice the Asian security concept and make due contributions to enduring peace, security and development of Asia. Both sides should intensify cooperation within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and work with other member states to push SCO cooperation for sustained, sound and stable development and elevate the influence of the SCO in international affairs.

Sergei Lavrov conveyed warm greetings from Vladimir Putin to Xi Jinping. Sergei Lavrov noted that President Vladimir Putin looks forward to his visit to China. On the occasion of celebrating the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Russia-China Good-Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, Russia is ready to, together with China, deepen Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination, further beef up high-level exchanges, deepen cooperation in such areas as economy and cultural and people-to-people exchanges, advance the implementation of major projects, and intensify coordination and cooperation on international and regional issues and within multilateral organizations including the UN and the SCO.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
