Hainan Research Institute for the South China Sea is an academic institute specializing in the South China Sea. Since its establishment in 1996,the institute has yielded quite some fundamental research results in various fields including history and geography of the South China Sea, dominion over Nansha archipelago, ocean demarcation, environmental protection and peripheral relation of the South China Sea, etc.

Established in Haikou City, the capital of Hainan Province, P.R.C., Hainan Research Institute for the South China Sea is an academic institute specializing in the South China Sea.  

The institute's researches cover various fields related to the South China Sea, and include:(1) Geography for the South China Sea;(2)History and sovereignty for the South China Sea islands;(3) the South China Sea policies, military and diplomatic conflicts of countries around the South China Sea; (4)The impact of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the development of the South China Sea issue;(5)Geopolitics for the South China Sea;(6) Development and preservation of the South China Sea resources;(7)Environ- mental protection for the South China Sea. The institute is planning to publish academic periodicals in addition to the South China Sea Research Series.

The institute has developed a South China Sea Documentation Database with an extensive collection of important documents about the South China Sea issue in both Chinese and English, which helps the institute to offer computer network aided services.
