On January 27, 2016, President Xi Jinping met with Secretary of State John Kerry of the US at the Great Hall of the People.
Xi Jinping pointed out that with the joint efforts of the two countries in the past year China-US relations made important progress. I made a successful state visit to the US at the invitation of President Barack Obama, during which both sides reached a new consensus in terms of further promoting the building of a new model of major-country relationship between China and the US. Overall, China and the US have coordinated and cooperated effectively with each other whether in the fields like economy and trade, military affairs, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and cyberspace safety, or on the international and regional issues as well as issues of global significance like climate change and the Iranian nuclear issue.
Xi Jinping stressed that the healthy and stable development of China-US relations is not only in the interests of both sides but also in line with the common expectation of the international community, thus China-US relations should be maintained with the joint efforts of the two countries. I am willing to keep close communication with President Barack Obama on major issues of common concern. The two countries should join hands to keep advancing the cooperative agenda already agreed, maintain communication and coordination on major international and regional issues as well as issues of global significance, and promote the proper solution of more issues.
Xi Jinping stated that I have mentioned on many occasions that by strengthening cooperation China and the US can make great contributions to the world. The two countries should earnestly implement the consensus reached by leaders of both sides, and expand cooperation in all fields at bilateral, regional and global levels in the principle of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, so as to promote China-US relations for new and greater development.
John Kerry expressed that US-China relations are very important. The effective communication and coordination between the two countries have played a vital role in promoting the reaching of the Paris Agreement on climate change and the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue. President Barack Obama is looking forward to keeping close contact with President Xi Jinping to further enhance US-China relations and reinforce bilateral cooperation in international affairs.
State Councilor Yang Jiechi attended the meeting.
