On May 26, 2016, President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolences to President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka over the flood and landslides in the country, expressing condolences to victims of the flood and landslides in Sri Lanka and profound sympathies to those affected.

Xi Jinping expressed in his message that the Chinese government is ready to fully support the Sri Lankan government to carry out relief works, and relevant Chinese departments will conduct close cooperation with Sri Lanka to continuously provide assistance within China's capacity so as to help with the relief work, and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction on the basis of existing works and in accordance with Sri Lanka's requirements.
