On January 26, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and visiting Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani of Afghanistan jointly met the press in Beijing. Wang Yi stated that China is always a trustworthy and reliable partner of the Afghan people on Afghanistan's way to peace.

Wang Yi stressed that as a peace mediator in the Afghan issue, China supports the "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" reconciliation process and appreciates the resumption of talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. It is consistent with the overall interests of the country and the nation of Afghanistan, and serves as the right path to lasting peace and security in Afghanistan.

Wang Yi said that the establishment of the mechanism of the quadrilateral coordination group of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the United States (US) aims at creating necessary external conditions for the Afghan government to resume talks with the Taliban. We hope that the quadrilateral coordination group continues its efforts and strive for an early reconciliation roadmap acceptable to all parties.

Wang Yi pointed out that whether the reconciliation process can achieve substantial progress is determined by many factors. The Afghan government and various political factions should pool consensus and work out an attractive and reasonable reconciliation solution, to which the Taliban is expected to show positive responses. Pakistan can play a positive and unique role in it. Other stakeholders including the US should take necessary measures to promote the resumption and implementation of peace talks.

Wang Yi said that China supports all initiatives and measures that are conducive to reconciliation and resumption of talks, which is also in line with China's security interests. China will continue to serve as a supporter, mediator and facilitator of peace talks.

Wang Yi pointed out that the reconciliation process in Afghanistan not only concerns the destiny of the Afghan people, but also influences regional security and stability. China is willing to strengthen communication on the matter with countries concerned such as Russia, Iran and India to make joint efforts and joint contributions to reconciliation.
