On March 15, 2016, President Xi Jinping sent a message to Htin Kyaw to congratulate him on his election as the President the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

Xi Jinping said in his congratulatory message that it is believed under the leadership of President Htin Kyaw, the people of Myanmar can certainly make greater achievements on the way of national construction and development.

Xi Jinping said China and Myanmar are linked by mountains and rivers, and their "Paukphaw" friendship enjoys a long history. The continuous deepening of good-neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Myanmar conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples. China is willing to work with Myanmar to promote the durable and stable development of the China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation and bring more benefits to both peoples.
