On June 7, 2016, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew of the US, who were in China to attend the eighth round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues and the seventh round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange.

Xi Jinping pointed out that under joint efforts of both sides, positive outcomes have been achieved from the eighth round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues and the seventh round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange. It is hoped that both sides can earnestly implement those outcomes, ensure effective results at an early date and benefit the two peoples as soon as possible.

Xi Jinping stressed that three years ago, President Barack Obama and I agreed to strive for a new model of major-country relations between China and the US. The development of bilateral relations over the following three years indicates that the path is completely in line with the fundamental interests of people of the two countries and the world, and it can go a long way. Both sides should firmly seize the historical trend of the development of bilateral relations, focus on cooperation, take practical measures, properly manage differences and prevent disruptions so as to promote the healthy and stable development of China-US relations. I look forward to meeting with President Barack Obama again during the G20 Hangzhou Summit to be held in early September, so as to continue to exchange views on major issues of common concern. The two countries should strengthen macro-economic policy coordination, strive for more positive outcomes from the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and inject confidence as well as new impetus into the world economy. Both countries can jointly tap cooperation potential in areas including trade and investment, clean energy, and environmental protection, and strengthen communication and coordination on major global and regional issues. China and the US need to endeavor to expand exchanges and cooperation between various sectors and at local levels, and set up more channels for both peoples to enhance exchanges. As for divergence between China and the US, the key is that both countries should respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and settle problems through dialogue and consultation, or manage them in a constructive manner so as to prevent bilateral relations from derailing from the right track.

Xi Jinping emphasized that there is much to do for China and the US. Both sides should do more things that are beneficial to China-US cooperation, and do none or fewer things that will harm bilateral cooperation. As long as both sides bear big picture in mind, focus on cooperation, meet each other halfway and take active actions, bilateral relations will be sure to move forward in the right direction of building the new model of major-country relations between China and the US.

John Kerry and Jacob Lew noted that the important speech delivered by President Xi Jinping at the joint opening ceremony for this round of strategic and economic dialogues and the high-level consultation on people-to-people exchange has set the tone and charted the course for the dialogues and consultation. President Barack Obama looks forward to meeting with President Xi Jinping when attending the G20 Summit this September in China. The US is willing to make joint efforts with China to ensure the success of the G20 Hangzhou Summit. President Barack Obama has reiterated that the US welcomes the rise of a stable and prosperous China. The productive US-China cooperation on countering climate change and other major issues indicates that US-China relations are the most important bilateral relations. The US believes that the two countries enjoy extensive cooperation potential and both sides can properly deal with differences with concerted efforts.

Vice Premier Liu Yandong, Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi attended the meeting.
